Sound Modules

Hey a new Rompler is out this time featuring the VSCO2 Community Orchestra. Check it out on a new blog devoted entirely to VST Instruments.

VSCO2 Community Orchestra Sound Module

Do I ever get tired of messing about with the labor of Mattias Westlund? Apparently not as here is the entire (I'm pretty sure) Sonatina Orchestra in a single 1 gig VST module (650 meg zip). 20 instruments and over 50 articulations. Note that the piccolo is tucked into the flute instrument and a few other instruments are tucked around. This is based on the idea of a free Rompler by the great Sample Science who created the Orion Sound Module. While they may not be Sampletank 3 and Miroslav 2, they cost a lot less. Hopefully there is some fun to be had here.

Thanks to my friend at VST4Free for providing an alternate download site.

Some exciting news, VSTBuzz is hosting the Module and has a great looking page for it.

Just a note, Cantabile Lite seems to work pretty well for just plugging in a keyboard and playing any VST instrument like this one. I'm not affiliated with them, just looking for the easiest way to play digital instruments.

OK thanks to advice by Samulis. Here is an experimental Mac VST. Hopefully I followed his instructions correctly and this works. I don't have a Mac so I can't test it, so please folks with Macs give it a try and let me know. Thanks.

Oops, thanks to Mr36 for finding a messed up articulation. Both the Violin and Cello Sustain problems are now fixed in the current version.

  1. Awesome. But yes, I would be interested in a 32 bit version.

  2. Hi. This is the first time I've come across this library and after just a quick try, I love it. One big downside to me is that the plugin parameters (e.g., ADSR envelope) do not show in my hosts (NI Maschine, Ableton Live). I think this would infinitely improve the plugin.
    Thanks.

    1. Thanks for trying out the module. I have an old Ableton Live Lite 8 version and the ADSR controls worked when adjusted by the mouse on my Win 10 computer. Sorry I don't have access to Maschine.

    2. Thanks for responding. It's not that the controls don't work in the plugin GUI, but that the controls aren't visible to the host (and therefore cannot be controlled and automated by the host).

    3. Gotcha. I can understand why that would be a great, but unfortunately I have no idea how to accomplish that using Maize Sampler.

  3. Also, the sustain of the celli sustain instrument does not work as expected (seemingly due to faulty sample loop points).

  4. Very interested! Please, could you make 32bit too? Still using 32bit host here... :/

  5. Oh, very nice, but yes please a 32-bit version as well!

  6. Fantastic - I've already had some good fun with the Sonatina sfz files/samples in Ableton - it's a really great collection, so thank you for this VST!

  7. thanks! Are there any usage restrictions for this one?

    1. Other than crediting Mattias Westlund on your album or youtube or whatever notes, there are no restriction. Do anything you like.

    2. Can you add a revision number to the download file to make sure we get the latest version?

      Delete
    3. That's a good point. The new version zips end with -64 or -32, so you can tell they are the new ones.

  8. I tried the 64x link but it says that it is unavailable. Bummer.

    1. Hum that is odd, there must be a lot of traffic on mediafire at the moment, the gentleman who runs VST4free has been kind enough to host the file as well you could try his site...

    2. Awesome. I just tried again and it is working great. Yeah, it was something with a server somewhere. Thank you.

  9. Hey Joe- making a Mac version is actually quite easy with Maize- just export a .component file out of a blank or nearly blank Maize project. Then, go dig inside of it and find where the .mse file is. Delete that .mse file (but NOT an other files) and replace it with all the other .mse's from your already exported VSTi .instruments folder. You can also do this to create 32-bit and 64-bit windows versions super quickly- ONLY the .dll changes with VSTi exports, and this is completely backwards/forwards compatible- anything from Maize 2.0 to present will open the .mse files, in case of a bug in the Maize engine. -Samulis

    1. Thanks Samulis. I'll give that a try. I didn't realize that the mses were interchangeable.

    2. Well no feedback on this, but hundreds of downloads and no one saying the Mac version doesn't work so I assume it does.

  10. Does not work in Reaper

    ReplyDelete

    1. It works in Win 7 & 10 with very recent versions of Reaper. Based on other feedback, I'm starting to wonder if it is a problem with XP?

  11. Thanks. I haven't checked everything, but the violin and celli sustains arent looping (the sfz versions do)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For some reason the Violin and Celli sustains came out completely wrong on this. I didn't realize it until after release and did a quick audible and got rid of the looping. Thanks for the reminder. I'll take a look and see if I can retry the samples and get them to loop correctly.

  12. um yeah so i installed SOM and i was able to get it in FLstudio but the thing is, it said that no instruments could be found and then i saw that the instruments were in some ".mse" or something name and not ".sfz" or whatever. how do i fix that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You should have a Sonatina Orchestra.dll in your vst directory and a subdirectory called Sonatina Orchestra.instruments . In that directory there should be 20 mse files. This is a standalone VST and not an SFZ instrument. As long as FLStudio can find the dll and the dll can find the mse files it should work correctly.

      Delete
    2. I can get Sonatina Orchestra to work but it says "Cannot find instruments".

      Delete
    3. That means it can't find the .mse files. Those are the actual instruments.

      Delete
    4. How will i get it to be able to find them?

      Delete
    5. All I do is unzip the zip file in my VST directory. The dll, subdirectory and mse files all go where they are supposed to.

    1. Quoting the guy who made Maize on the KVR forum...
"On Macs a lot of special folders are considered as a bundle file, such as AU .component. You have to copy the entire .component folder to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Component."

  14. I like the theme, Joe. It's highly reader-friendly.

  15. I'm on a Mac. The VST loads fine into Digital Performer 9.13 under OS X 10.9.5. Thank you!

I checked all the instruments, and everything seems to play nicely! However the subcategory list for Harp shows as

    Group List
    Default Group

All the other instruments show up fine.

Is there any way to make an instrument/rompler that's generated with Maize accept patch changes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good question. Not that I'm aware of. You could ask on the Maize forum over on KVR. Sample Science seems to know the most about Maize and he hangs out there sometimes.

      Delete
    2. Thanks! I am in touch with Sample Science, and I will ask him. I had no idea he was using Maize Sampler - I am as well, and I'll definitely ask him! Best regards to you Joe! Sorry about the late reply and thanks for the info.

    1. Traditionally Mac uses AU. You can find most of the individual Sonatina instruments in AU on VST4Free just search Sonatina. you might try one and see if it works before downloading them all though.

  18. Thanks for this great instrument. I downloaded but I was only able to see the libraries and the dll file, the setup is missing. I tried load it up in FL Studio but it says "Cannot find any instrument" I guess it's because of lack of installation. Pls how do I get the setup?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You should be able to just unzip unto your vst directory. There is a dll and a subfolder where the instruments are. Usually if the instruments aren't found it is because there is no instrument subfolder.

  19. i have instrument subfolder but Fl studio still says "Cannot find any instrument" i need help.

  22. Hi, I've unzipped the dll and folder inside the VSTPlugins folder of my Cuebase 5, but it still doesn't recognize it. I'm using windows7 64bit. Is there a way to make it work? I've been messing around with it for hours and have no idea what the problem is.

  23. Hello, I wanted to know what are the user licenses, is it only personal and social networks or also commercial use?

  24. Sonatina Orchestra is a mighty good sounding package of instruments, I'm looking forward to using it...once I can get the ADSR to work correctly while playing the module from MIDI. The decay doesn't seem to respond, it just seems to be either on or off, abrupt decay like a Mellotron or something. It only seems to have effect on notes when there's at least one MIDI note on, but let go of the last note and boop! cuts off instantly. Doesn't sound natural at all. Weird thing is, it works fine if I'm pressing the module's onscreen keys with the mouse. Frustrating! I'm using Reaper on a Windows PC, btw, with an old Kawai synth as a controller through an M-Audio Midisport Uno interface.

  25. Hello. I would really like to try out your instruments. I keep running in to the 'Cannot find any instruments' error that is frequently mentioned above (operating on Windows 10). I see that your answer has consistently been to install the files into the VST folder.

Point blank, this does not work. I have installed the files into every place that VST files have been placed in my system, from my standard default, to Window's default, to the default of a few other programs. Can you please tell me, in the code, what directory is the plugin looking in to find the instrument library files?

    Thank you kindly,
    -elfman-

Firstly, my compliments for developing such a great software. My straightforward question: is Sonatina compatible with Logic Audio Platinum 5, running on a Windows 10 PC? Thank you in advance for your kind reply.
