Since a company issued an invalid take down order there have been issues with downloads. I just put up a complete 1.7 gig version using the generic name Chamber Orchestra which hopefully can be downloaded.
Sam Gossner had a dream. After creating the original VSCO which was nice little orchestra, he wanted to create something bigger and bolder. Collaborating with dozens of friends from both sides of the pond, he created a new chamber orchestra. Two years in the making this version at its largest (and most expensive but still quite reasonable) has 300 instruments.
However he didn't forget you and I, the freebie loving population of the world. He has put over 2000 samples under a Creative Commons Zero license which is similar to Public Domain. These include 16 string, brass, woodwind and keys instruments along with lots of handy orchestral percussion. This is called the Community Edition and there is a full SFZ version and an EXS24 version in the making on this page along with all the original samples. Thanks to Sam and his friends for this tremendous contribution to the world of free music.
Composer Steven McDonald made a nice video demonstrating some nice ways to get the VSCO2 sounding pretty solid for a free orchestra.

Thanks again and again. Your hard work is so very much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThank you BigCat!! Kontakt wouldn't be the same without your work!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much !!
ReplyDeleteHow do I use these in Kontakt? Or do I need something else? Thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteJust unzip them into a directory and then under the 'Files' tab in your Kontakt browser go find that directory. You should see the .nki files for each instrument. Double click on one of the instruments and it should load up into Kontakt.
DeleteSadly only companies that pay NI get to be in the library tab.
thank you.. perfect
DeleteThank you very much for this big effort! Unfortunately when loading into Kontakt it mentions that these are 'DEMO' instruments, and they become unavailable after 10min or so. Is this correct?
ReplyDeleteHave you got the full version of Kontakt?
DeleteNo, I have the free version. But with other (free) instruments I don't have this problem (I am not an expert user, apologies if the question is silly...)
DeleteSorry in general only the included NI instruments or certain paid instruments work with the Kontakt Player. It is a (very expensive) licensing issue. Drum'mica also works with Player but is paid for by a huge company. I suggest the SFZ versions which work with the free SForzando.
DeleteHi Joe, I have Kontakt 5.3 and when I try to import the library I have an issue message that tells me that I got an old version of Kontatk: Does the library work only with the last version (Kontakt 5.4)?
ReplyDeleteI just checked and I have 5.5, though I'm holding off on 5.6 because a lot of folks don't like it / have problems with it.
DeleteWell, the most of people have got the last in Native Instruments Site: 5.4.2, i just updated my version but it's not enough, I'm trying to get a 5.5 version but it's hard .__.
Deleteok I resolved!
Deletethis is great thanks!
ReplyDeleteive installed and everything is in place, instruments are loading, but no sound is coming out?
Do you have the full version of Kontakt and are other instruments working?
DeleteI just tried it and it was working as expected in the full version.
Don´t know if it will work by me, but if yes i couldn´t say how much thanks for this and how unbelievable and honuored, that is what you do here
ReplyDeleteThanks
If you have Vista or later or Mac, you might try the VSTs if the Kontakt version doesn't work for you.

ReplyDeleteMr. Large Feline - This is very generous of you. Thank you. Could you please, in a nutshell, explain what the difference(s) might be, both sonically and otherwise, between the SFZ and Kontakt versions.
ReplyDeleteThank you again for your hard work, generosity and contributions to the community of penniless musical prodigies around the world
I was trained in radio production, dead air or I suppose latency in this context terrifies me. The Kontakt version tends to be tighter and normalized to have less variations. The SFZ is more leisurely and more organic.
DeleteJust wanted to one big thanks to you guys.... very much appreciated.... some creative music is going to be achieved.......
ReplyDeleteDavey
Thank you that's all I want to say
ReplyDeleteThis is outstanding work, thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this outstanding work!
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me how we can change the articulation in Kontak 5?
You should just be able to keyswitch using the keys to the left of the notes keys. They show up red in my version of Kontakt.
DeleteYou might need to use the octave up and down buttons beside the keyboard for some of the bass type instruments to see the keyswitches.
Hi Joe,
ReplyDeleteAnother small question here - I've got the Kontakt version of the string instruments working in 5.5, but they are all playing in monophonic style - i.e. impossible to play chords or more than one note at a time. Is there a setting in the scripts that I have to change? I'm not familiar with Kontakt editing, but the max voices is set to a high number.
Thanks for your help
DRMF
I wish I knew what to tell you. They should work fine with many notes at a time, basically as many as there are max voices.
DeleteNo worries - at least now I know that it's not a feature that I'm too silly to notice and turn off! I seem to be jinxed with using these, but I'll get there in the end hopefully :)
DeleteAre you planning to do the Woodwinds as well?
ReplyDeleteYes. After the DMCA takedown stuff, I just thought I would put up the new version of the orchestra instead of having several versions and only the woodwinds are left to do in the new version.
DeleteOh yeah, there's that.... forgot about that.
DeleteLooking forward to it anyway :)
It's there now together with Etherealwinds Harp 2 CE, I see. That's fast :)
DeleteMany thanks!
Hi, I can't download VSCO Strings, there's nothing in the mediafire page :(
ReplyDeleteI just tried it and it worked...
Deletehttp://www.mediafire.com/file/v63fasb9ocahe3s/An_Orchestra_Strings_VSCO_2.zip
This is what it says to me "The file you attempted to download has been previously claimed by a copyright holder through a valid DMCA request and cannot be downloaded."
DeleteHum that is odd. The company withdrew the claims and were supposed to inform Mediafire. I'll see what I can do.
DeleteAs an addition I am getting the same message for both the strings and the brass.
Delete*Edit* Just realised there is the single Chamber package at the top so will download that instead. Regards
DeleteGreat job, Joe. Thank you very much.
