Sonatina Symphony Orchestra for Kontakt

Another Kontakt libary project. This time the legendary Creative Commons Licensed Sonatina Symphony Orchestra created by Mattias Westlund. In addition to the samples included in SSO, I've added some samples that Mattias put up on his blog after the release of Sonatina. Each instrument has all articulations included in a single Kontakt instrument.

Allow me to quote from the Sonatina Symphony Orchestra website.
"Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra is a free orchestral sample library. While not as advanced or ambitious in scope as commercial offerings, SSO contains all the basic building blocks for creating real virtual orchestrations. It's primarily aimed at beginners, but also more experienced composers looking for something lightweight and/or portable might find it useful."

If you already have the SSO samples, Thorsten Keller was kind enough to create an small 8 meg file that allows you to use the new Kontakt mappings without re downloading the samples. It contains the nkis and the wallpapers. Just point the instrument to your SSO samples folder and then the Wallpaper and save it.

"Licensing - SSO is a free (as in speech, and beer) library released under the Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0 license."

  2. Not sure if my previous comment got posted, trying again.

Thank you for these instruments and sound great. The Tuba does not seem to play. The Kontakt keys seem to depress, but dont see the Round Robins being selected. All other instruments play well.

    take care,

    DaveT

  3. Hi Joe,

Oops, my error, I didnt hit the keyswitches. Nothing plays with the tuba until one of the keyswitches is selected.
    So the Tuba does work.

    take care,

  7. Hi, I've just discovered this, it's great!
I've got a basic question: can anyone tell me what does the "Hold" knob do?
    Thanks!
Ps: I'm sorry for my english, I´m from Argentina!

    1. Your English is fine. Basically Hold is how long before the Decay and Sustain kick in. So 0 Hold means that if you are using decay/sustain, the note will start decaying right after you hit it.

    2. Ok, thanks Joe. I'm new on virtual instruments and synthesizers. I'm fascinated with the possibilities!

    3. They are interesting. I really don't understand most of the thing you can do with them, especially synths. For a list of more freebies take a look at my other blog.

  8. I have a problem. My kontakt version no load Sonatina instruments. My version is Kontakt 5.4.3. You help me, tank you!

  9. Sorry it isn't working for you. I'm not sure what version I had when I made these. I have 5.5 now. You should just be able to use the Ni Update Center to get a newer version.

  10. I wanted to create a hybrid orchestral tool using these samples. I would be pricing it between $3.50-$10. I will be doing extensive layering and modular effect work. I do not plan to take them as is and simply sell them. Is this something I can do? I'm just a poor fool who can't afford to hire an orchestra but I have big ideas!

    1. You know I'm not sure. Check the original site and take a look at the license. You might also see if Mattias has a functioning email.

  11. hello joe!!
    congratulations and good job!!
there is a problem with http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/?

    thanks

    1. That license has been retired, but the conditions still stand. You can use the samples to create any musical work commercial or non-commercial, you are just requested to credit Mattias. If you make a derivative work like my versions of the Sonatina, you can't sell them.

  12. It would b great to let it works also with the free Kontakt Player, but "compatible Libraries must be activated in the Service Center with a twenty-five digit serial number, otherwise they likely require the full version of KONTAKT."

    1. Sadly it costs, I believe, $10 to $20 per Player instrument or collection of instruments to license from NI. I'm not sure the exact breakdown but we've given away roughly 3.1 million instruments or collections of which the majority are Kontakt. So call it 2 million Kontakt instruments at the lowest price of $10 per license, $20 million dollars. Not in the budget I'm afraid.
Also just for the record I'm told that NI won't license a Kontakt player library that retails for under $100 dollars anyway.

  13. I can not add this in my Kontakt
How can I add please tell about this matter

    1. It wont be in your Libraries tab as that is reserved for Kontakt Player compatible libraries. You can find it under the files tab, just find the directory you unzipped the orchestra in. You can just double click the nkis to get them to load.
Note this needs full Kontakt to use and not Kontakt Player.

  14. i am sorry, i am very new to this and i do not understand what to do, i have all the files but how do i get them into reaper? do i need to download some empty sample VST or something?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You should have a VST directory that Reaper reads to find VSTs. If you unzip these into the VST directory and then restart Reaper and maybe run a scan they should show up in your instruments. I'm not a Reaper user myself, but you can ask in the Reaper forums as they are really nice people over there.

    1. Are you using the full version of Kontakt? It won't work with Kontakt Player.

  16. How can I switch between sustain and staccato violins ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You should be able to keyswitch using the red colored keys don't forget the flats and sharps. D#2 and E2 are the shorts. The solo violin only has sustains.

  17. Hey, I was just wondering if there were any plans to register with native instruments so that the libraries will be compatible with Kontakt player? I'm not even sure how that would work or if there would be a fee involved, but was curious. thank you for you help!

    1. I sure wish that was possible. Some friends looked into the cost with an idea of maybe fundraising to it for me. Basically NI charges a developer for so many licenses at so much per license. As an order of magnitude it might cost 20 bucks a license for 1000 licenses, though they don't publish that info and it varies with each contract. So there isn't even a way to fund raise say $10,000 to buy a one time license.

This is why I started doing the Maize Sampler instruments which had a one-off cost of $100 bucks. They aren't as nice, but at least it is a way to let everyone use them.

  18. Hi, I just downloaded all the nki-files, but where are the samples?? Thanks a lot for your help

    ReplyDelete
  19. Is there a way to load the instruments not as Demo? For some reason when I load them in Kontakt they load as Demo and they stop playing after a few minutes

    ReplyDelete
  20. installed Sonatina Orchestra in Reaper, but can only load violins. What do I need to do to get the other instruments to play? I can see them in the folder, just can't load them.

  21. These sampled instruments are absolutely lovely.
Especially with the option to adjust the attack.
I admire what you did with this.

  22. Hi, where can find this serial key for activate this VST? hoping can anyone will answer my comments, thank you :)
