For example take the Pluck It Section of the Orchestra. you can download all three instruments together or the Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar separately. Then get the samples from the Philharmonia Orchestra, mp3 to wave them and drop the appropriate waves in the samples folder for each instrument.
DIY Violin - 1000 sample instrument with five to six velocity layers in 1/4 second, 1/2 second, 1 second and 1 1/2 second notes as well as pizzicato. Also glissando, legato, martelle, spiccato, staccato, tremolo, trill, detache, punta, talon, and tenuto phrases.
DIY Viola - 800 samples with five velocity layers in 1/4 second, 1/2 second, 1 second and 1 1/2 second notes as well as pizzicato. Also phrases but fewer and more lightly sampled.
DIY Cello Test - A small start.
DIY Philharmonic Pluck It Section - containing Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar
DIY Philharmonic Banjo
DIY Philharmonic Mandolin
DIY Philharmonic Guitar
DIY Brass Section
DIY Trumpet
DIY French Horn
So far the brass instruments contain the 2 Second Instrument (the longest brass samples from Philharmonia last about 2 seconds), Instrument Old (these seem to be older, slightly low quality samples) and Instrument Phrases (trills, crescendos and such). Eventually I'll add in the shorter samples as separate instruments and all in one instrument control by the mod wheel.
The Philharmonia Orchestra have licensed their samples under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. You can use these samples for a Commercial Work. Just give attribution to the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Sir please what about the remaining orchestral instruments...please could u help create mappings for them sir.....thanks for the ones you have done already
ReplyDeleteI'd kind of forgotten about them. I'll take a look and see if I remember how to do it. It will be a while, but I'll try to add more in. Thanks for reminding me.
DeleteThanks Joe! These are great, and I'd really appreciate any others you get around to.
DeleteDear Joe you have done an awesome job. Appreciate your efforts and a BIG Thank you for this. Looking forward to more shells for the remaining instruments.
DeleteThank you so much! I would also love more of the other instrument shells!

Thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteAny chance it can be converted as SFZ? :)
ReplyDeleteSorry I don't understand SFZ coding, you could ask over at the KVR Samples forum, some guys who do SFZ hang out over there. Unfortunately it is pretty hard to do an instrument when you can't actually distribute the samples.
DeleteI've been looking at the scripts and trying to remember what I did and looking at the other string samples. If I can remember how it all works, I think I'll try to get to work on the Cello for Kontakt.
You can try this program for setting up SFZs from these samples, but unfortunately it doesn't account for the dead space at the start the the samples.

Since I wrote the comment, I've actually been cleaning the samples and fixing the SFZ files to use, but I'm not even halfway done yet hehe... I wish there was an easy way to convert kontakt instruments into SFZ! Thanks for your help anyways, Joe!
DeleteIf you get the SFZ files working and would like to share them, I would be happy to host them and give you credit.
DeleteI might be a bit late, but is it working?
DeleteHi, absolutely love this! The only problem im having is that after a little while Kontakt player says the demo version has run out even though i activated kontakt player straight away. anybody have any experience of this?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately the way Kontakt works is that Kontakt Player only works in 15 minute demo mode for non-licensed libraries. The full version of Kontakt doesn't have this limitation but of course costs a good chunk of money for you the user.
DeleteHi Joe! I am having trouble as when I downloaded the samples from the philharmonia website (for Trumpet) they came as mp3's not wavs so Kontakt is not recognising them even though the name before .mp3 is identical...? do you have any idea how to fix this? Many thanks in advance
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately you do have to convert them to wave files.
DeleteOk cool big thanks for this (apologies I just saw you'd already mentioned the conversion in your article). Do you recommend a program for doing so on mac? iTunes changed all the file names to their titles "Trpt #.wav"...
ReplyDeleteThanks again for your time and the great resource..!
I've been assured that under Creative Commons terms I can distribute the instruments, so I just zipped my directory of the instruments including samples...

Wow thank you Joe!! Runs like a charm. Your time and knowledge (could not have done this) is greatly appreciated.
DeleteNo problem. Someday after I get done messing with VSCO2 and No Budget, I really need to take a look at these samples.
DeleteMy god, you're a legend Joe. Thank you for sticking with this project.
DeleteI guess the notes don't really sustain though, the samples are a bit short eh
DeleteBrilliant work you have done here. Though the original samples are not always high quality, this is nonetheless a very useful resource.
ReplyDeleteGreat effort and much appreciated .. although it seemed at first i didn't seem to get all samples, it turns out its my converter who has converting amount limits... Thanks a mil
